Kodak posts app for Orbit360 for both iOS and Android

Image
The app for controlling the Kodak Orbit360 has been uploaded, both for iOS and Android. Kodak PIXPRO's highly anticipated Orbit360 (also called 4KVR360) hasn't been released yet but Kodak has already released the phone app for both iOS and Android.  It's called PIXPRO 360 VR Remote Viewer.   Here it is on Android and here is the link for iOS . The app description says, You can connect to KODAK PIXPRO ORBIT360 4K (or KODAK PIXPRO 4KVR360) via this APP, realizing the functions of shooting, recording, changing the shooting parameters, playback and editing the moving images easily.  For iOS, the minimum requirement appears to be an iPhone 5S.  The Google Play Store doesn't specify what the requirements are for Android. A screenshot from the app seems to show that it has a self-timer feature (finally!), a function which had been missing from the Kodak SP360 4K Dual Pro. Another screen shot shows that the app has a simple video editor that will enable you to trim videos (not

360 video comparison: 2017 Samsung Gear 360 vs. Kodak PIXPRO SP360 4K Dual Pro

How does the 2017 Samsung Gear 360 compare against last year's video quality champ?  Check out these comparison videos. Last year, I found that the Kodak SP360 4k Dual Pro had the best video quality among consumer 360 cameras.  I thought it would be interesting to compare the 2017 Gear 360 against the SP360 4K Dual Pro.  Here's a playlist with a sample from the SP360 4K Dual Pro and another sample from 2017 Gear 360. Here are screenshots (the bluish one is the SP360 4K). For near objects, the SP360 4K Dual Pro was sharper and more detailed. SP360 4K Dual Pro 2017 Gear 360 For distant objects, the SP360 was also more detailed.  In the SP360 sample below, you can see the texture of the far wall. On the 2017 Gear 360, the texture on the wall is not visible. On the other hand, the stitching on the Gear 360 is far superior: SP360 4K Dual Pro stitching 2017 Gear 360 stitching In summary, the Kodak SP360 4k Dual Pro appears to be sharper and more detailed than the 2017 Gear 360, but t

Mac software for the 2017 Samsung Gear 360 now available!

Image
The Mac desktop stitching software for the 2017 Samsung Gear 360 is now available! Here is the link to the Mac software . Here are the requirements for the software . I don't know yet if the 2017 stitching software can also stitch photos and videos of the original Gear 360. Samsung also posted the requirements for the PC version of the desktop software (Gear 360 Action Director 2).  In case you missed it, the link to the new Action Director software is here .  The new software can work with both the original and the new Gear 360.  The software can be activated with either the original Gear 360 or the 2017 Gear 360's serial number. Meanwhile the 2017 Gear 360 is still pretty hard to find outside of Korea and parts of Europe.  However, you can buy it on eBay where reseller prices have dropped to as low as $260 (just $10 more than the MSRP) . Thank you very much to Axel Baumann of  www.video-tv355.de for sharing this info!

More info on Xiaomi Mijia Sphere 360; on sale at GearBest

Image
Here are more info on Xiaomi's Mijia Sphere 360 camera, launched a few weeks ago on April 6, which is on sale at GearBest for a limited time. Update: here is my full review . About 3 weeks ago, Xiaomi announced the Xiaomi Mijia Sphere 360 camera while Yi announced a 360 camera a few days ago.  Xiaomi and Yi, who used to be partners for the Xiaomi Yi action camera, are therefore now directly competing with each other.   Much of the attention is now on Yi, with its 5.7K resolution, but the Xiaomi Mijia Sphere should not be overlooked.  Here is some more information about it: - two 190-degree lenses, with f/2.0 aperture - video resolution: 3456 x 1728 @ 30 fps; 2304 x 1152 @ 60fps or 30fps. - photo resolution: 6912 x 3456 - ISO can be manually set from ISO 50 to 1600 in 1-stop increments - Shutter speed can be manually set up to "8" (I hope this means up to 8 seconds?) - 6-axis electronic image stabilization (3-axis gyro and 3-axis acceloremeter) - IP67 water resistance

Acer Holo 360 is a hybrid 360 camera and smartphone

Image
Acer announced the Holo 360, a hybrid device that is both a 360 camera and smartphone. Just the other day, my friend Ben Claremont (Life in 360) and I were discussing about when 360 cameras would become truly popular, and Ben's prediction was that phones would have built-in 360 cameras, which would make them grow in popularity.  In that regard, one of the fastest growing sub-categories of 360 cameras of the past year have been 360 cameras that attach to smartphones (such as the Insta360 Nano, Insta360 Air and Giroptic iO).   We also saw two smartphones from Protruly called Darling that had built-in 360 cameras . Acer today made a surprise announcement of the Holo 360, a hybrid device that is a 360 camera but can also function as an Android smartphone.  The underlying premise is that you would be able to share your 360 photos and videos directly from the Holo 360 without connecting the camera to a phone or desktop.  Acer did not give other details (such as resolution, price or avai

NAB Show 2017: Panasonic 360 Live Camera (AW-360) has sophisticated real time stitching and is entering production

Image
Panasonic AW-360 at NAB 2017. Photo credit: Svend Even Haerra At NAB Show 2017, Panasonic again showcased their 4k 360 live streaming camera, only this time, they confirmed that it would be entering production.  Panasonic is now the third major camera manufacturer (after Ricoh Pentax and Nikon) to enter the growing 360 camera industry. About five months ago at the International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition, Panasonic showed a prototype 360 camera with 4k live streaming .  At NAB Show 2017, Panasonic confirmed that they would be producing the 360 camera, called the 360 Live Camera (AW-360).  They also revealed more specifications. The AW-360 consists of a camera head (AW-360C10) and a base unit (AW-360B10).  Here are the key specifications: - four 1/2.3-inch sensors - four fisheye lenses with f/2.4 aperture - video resolution: 3840 x 1920 - frame rates: 25, 29.97, 50, 59.94 The AW-360 streaming has very low latency and is uncompressed for high image quality. Insta360 Air realtime stabilization demo and firmware upgrade tutorial

Image
Realtime stabilization has now been added Insta360 Air, the first 360 camera for Android phones.  Here's a demo and a tutorial for upgrading the firmware required this feature. Here's the demo video and tutorial: HOW TO INSTALL Before you begin, here are two tips for installation: 1. When connecting the Insta360 Air to your phone, connect the Air directly and not through an adapter.  This will minimize the chance for errors. After installing, you can go back to using the adapter. 2. You'll be inserting and reinserting the Air a lot.  To avoid smearing the lens, you can put the Insta360 Air in its silicone rubber case upside down.  You'll still be able to insert it into your phone. Here are the steps. 1.  Install the Insta360 Air app version 1.4 or above on your smartphone. As of April 27, version 1.4 is still not live on Google Play Store but you can download the beta version from Insta360.com.  Use your phone to go to Insta360.com .  On the upper left corner, click on

Interview with Yi Technology about the Yi 360 VR, with the highest video resolution for consumer 360 cameras

Image
Probably the biggest news for 360 cameras out of NAB Show 2017 is the Yi 360 VR, a 360 camera with 5.7K video, the highest video resolution for consumer 360 cameras thus far, for just $399.  I had a chance to talk to Yi Technology about the Yi 360 VR. Here is the 360 video interview with Yi Technology's Director of Marketing.  Also with me was Svend Even Haerra from NRK, Norway's Public Broadcasting Station.  You also get to see my reaction when I first found out about the Yi 360 VR! :D (To shoot the video, I used the Nikon Keymission 360 and Guru 360 gimbal .) If you found the video helpful, please take a moment to hit the Like button on YouTube, and and please consider subscribing to the 360 Rumors YouTube channel ! For specifications and other info on the Yi 360 VR see here .  Again, the Yi 360 VR is $399, shipping in June.  If you are interested in preordering the Yi 360 VR, you can sign up here  (you'll need to scroll down to the bottom of the page).  Note that your c

Ricoh's exhibit at NAB Show 2017: Ricoh Theta 4K, Ricoh R and other news

Image
Ricoh had TWO booths at NAB Show 2017 - one at the VR Pavilion at North Hall, and another at Central Hall.  Here's the news from Ricoh. Ricoh is #1 in the growing 360 camera industry Industry analyst Strategy Analytics confirmed that Ricoh has the highest sales in the 360 camera industry , followed by Samsung and LG.   This is consistent with what I found previously for sales ranking  (except that Samsung is doing much better than in the results I found). Strategy Analytics also forecast that sales for 360 cameras will grow 350% over the next two years.  This is pretty impressive, considering that the market for point-and-shoot cameras has all but disappeared, and even interchangeable lens camera sales are declining (with the exception of Sony mirrorless cameras). Ricoh Theta 4K demo At NAB Show, Ricoh showed the highly anticipated new 4K Theta, which features 4K video @ 30fps, live streaming at 4K 30 fps, 4-channel microphone for spatial audio, and an Android operating system that

Housekeeping announcements: 360 camera Facebook discussion group, 360Rumors.com, and 360 Rumors store

Image
Just a few announcements: 1. 360Rumors.com launch 360Rumors.com  is now live!  It features a more polished and more organized interface.  I think the search feature works better as well. I wasn't able to implement redirection so I'll just run the original 360rumors.blogspot.com and the new 360rumors.com in parallel for now, although 360rumors.com will be the primary site and eventually I will stop updating 360rumors.blogspot.com. 2.  Forum for 360 cameras and for 360 Rumors readers: There are a number of Facebook groups for particular 360 cameras or particular brands.  If you want to discuss 360 cameras and are tired of jumping from one group to another, I created a Facebook group to discuss 360 cameras of any type, any brand, cleverly called the 360 Cameras Group.  This is also a forum for readers of 360 Rumors.   Check it out here ! 3.  360 Rumors store is open! If you want to buy a camera or accessory and want to support 360 Rumors, you can check out the 360 Rumors store her

NAB Show 2017: Insta360 Pro first impressions plus realtime stabilization demo and more

Image
Insta360 had a big presence at NAB Show 2017.  I checked out their booth along with my friend Svend Even Haerra from NRK, the Norwegian Public Broadcasting Station.  I got to see some new footage from the Insta360 Pro as well as see a demo of its realtime image stabilization, and I found out other interesting news. Insta360 had a large exhibit at NAB Show 2017 and they were very busy.  I saw some footage from the Insta360 Pro - an 8K still, an 8K video, a 6K 3D video, a 4K video at 100fps, and they all looked amazing.  By "amazing," here's what I mean: often when I view a 360 video, I think to myself, it's nice but I wish it was more detailed.  I didn't get that feeling with the Insta360 Pro footage.  It looked very sharp and detailed, even the one at 4K @ 100fps (perhaps because it's downsampled from 8K).  It looked about as detailed as a regular non-360 HD video. In fact, IMHO, it looked as good as, if not better than the $45,000 Nokia OZO ,  I know that s
