Xiaomi Mi Sphere endurance test: I couldn't believe the results!

Image
I was curious about how long the Xiaomi Mi Sphere can record at its full resolution, so I tested it.  The results were astonishing! One of the quirks of the Xiaomi is that it can get hot.  Very hot.  As hot as your coffee cup.  This is because the frame on the edge is made of metal, and I believe it acts as a radiator for the processor.  Because the Xiaomi gets very hot, I've been concerned about how long it can record video, so I've never tried to record for very long (besides the fact that very long 360 videos can get boring). Nonetheless, it's always good to know the limits of your equipment, so I decided today would be the day I would find out. Part 1: Plugged in . One of the cool things about the Xiaomi is that you can connect it to a USB power source and it will power the camera while recording.  That's what I did for the first test.  I set up the Xiaomi to record video, while plugged into a USB adapter.  It was in a small room with no fan a...

Insta360 Air realtime stabilization demo and firmware upgrade tutorial

Image
Realtime stabilization has now been added Insta360 Air, the first 360 camera for Android phones.  Here's a demo and a tutorial for upgrading the firmware required this feature. Here's the demo video and tutorial: HOW TO INSTALL Before you begin, here are two tips for installation: 1. When connecting the Insta360 Air to your phone, connect the Air directly and not through an adapter.  This will minimize the chance for errors. After installing, you can go back to using the adapter. 2. You'll be inserting and reinserting the Air a lot.  To avoid smearing the lens, you can put the Insta360 Air in its silicone rubber case upside down.  You'll still be able to insert it into your phone. Here are the steps. 1.  Install the Insta360 Air app version 1.4 or above on your smartphone. As of April 27, version 1.4 is still not live on Google Play Store but you can download the beta version from Insta360.com.  Use your phone to go to Insta360.com .  On the upper lef...

NAB Show 2017: Insta360 Pro first impressions plus realtime stabilization demo and more

Image
Insta360 had a big presence at NAB Show 2017.  I checked out their booth along with my friend Svend Even Haerra from NRK, the Norwegian Public Broadcasting Station.  I got to see some new footage from the Insta360 Pro as well as see a demo of its realtime image stabilization, and I found out other interesting news. Insta360 had a large exhibit at NAB Show 2017 and they were very busy.  I saw some footage from the Insta360 Pro - an 8K still, an 8K video, a 6K 3D video, a 4K video at 100fps, and they all looked amazing.  By "amazing," here's what I mean: often when I view a 360 video, I think to myself, it's nice but I wish it was more detailed.  I didn't get that feeling with the Insta360 Pro footage.  It looked very sharp and detailed, even the one at 4K @ 100fps (perhaps because it's downsampled from 8K).  It looked about as detailed as a regular non-360 HD video. In fact, IMHO, it looked as good as, if not better than the $45,000 Nokia OZO ,  ...
